ESG in Review: Advocating for a More Circular Economy and Further...

At Aptar, it’s not just about making a better dispensing or drug delivery system, it’s about making a difference. As a recognized leader in our field, we take our place of influence seriously. We give back to the communities where our people live and work. We want to be part of the solution for a more sustainable world. That’s why we are advocating for a circular economy where recycling improves and the use of recycled materials becomes the norm in our industry. We want to deliver solutions and shape the future.

To that end, we are proud to be named “One of the Top 100 Most Sustainable Companies 2019” by Barron’s and one of “America’s Most Responsible Companies 2020” by Newsweek.

Here is a quick look at our Environment, Social, Governance key partnerships and achievements from the year.

Circular Economy

Aptar is a signatory of the Ellen MacArthur New Plastics Economy Global commitment and has joined forces with organizations, such as CE100, that are committed to changing how we produce, use and reuse plastic. Aptar also became a member of the World Business Council for Sustainable Development (WBCSD). Connecting with WBCSD’s 200 other members provides an invaluable opportunity to share best practices and make a circular economy a reality.

Aptar’s partners, PureCycle and Terracycle, were both named to the TIME 100 Best Inventions for 2019. PureCycle Technologies was named for their Ulta-Pure Recycled Polypropylene (UPRP) which is a food grade recycled resin and Terracycle was included for their e-commerce platform, “Loop”, where customers can purchase products they know and love in refillable containers and Loop will pick up the containers after use to be cleansed and sent out again.

Diversity and Inclusion

Today Aptar is taking steps to lead in gender diversity and equality in the workplace, by enabling a culturally diverse workforce and nurturing an inclusive and welcoming culture.

These principles are pervasive throughout Aptar’s organization, beginning at the very top. Today, 30% of Aptar’s Board of Directors is comprised of directors added in the past two years, with 50% being added in the past 5 years. The Board includes 40% women and all Board committees are chaired by women directors. We have been recognized by the Women’s Forum of New York as a Corporate Champion for leading the way toward gender balance on corporate boards. Aptar is also included in the SPDR® SSGA Gender Diversity Index ETF (SHE), which invests in US large-capitalization companies that rank among the highest in their sector in terms of gender diversity within senior leadership positions. Aptar has also joined more than 60 other leading global companies in the Catalyst CEO Champions for Change movement through a commitment to furthering gender equality, diversity, and inclusion in the workplace.

Looking Ahead to 2020

Guided by our core values, we embrace our humane and compassionate workplace that welcomes everyone and actively supports the communities where we live and work. We promote openness, honesty and feedback across all stakeholders.

Our distinctive corporate culture is strengthened by the trust and respect we have for each other, our unique and immersive training programs, and our support of a healthy and balanced life for all.

Aptar Acquires Noble International, a Leader in Drug Delivery Tra...

Aptar has acquired Noble International, a leader in drug delivery training devices and patient onboarding. This acquisition furthers Aptar’s strategy to broaden its portfolio of services that support pharmaceutical and biotech customers through all stages of their drug development journey.

The proper administration, in particular self-administration, of certain medications can be challenging.  With the movement of treatments from the healthcare provider to the home, the need to ensure accurate, consistent and safe use of the device has become a critical component of the effectiveness of the treatment.

Noble’s purpose is to improve patient experiences and outcomes by developing patient-centric advanced drug delivery system training devices – including autoinjectors, prefilled syringes, on-body and respiratory devices – for the world’s leading biopharmaceutical companies and original equipment manufacturers. Noble has also developed a connected solution for injectable devices, which senses and monitors how a patient interacts with the specific steps of drug delivery, and can wirelessly transmit real-time data.

Human behaviors and user experiences are critical elements of Noble’s proprietary training device design process. Combined with patient onboarding programs, Noble’s training devices – which mimic the feel, force and function of the actual drug delivery device – are designed to reduce error and increase device familiarity, both keys to helping patients improve adherence and, ultimately, health outcomes.

Stephan Tanda, Aptar President and CEO, stated, “We are pleased to welcome the Noble team to the Aptar family. This strategic acquisition meets our disciplined approach of acquiring companies with strong positions in attractive markets, proprietary technologies and robust growth fundamentals. The combination of Noble and Aptar will bring additional value to our pharmaceutical customers as they seek to put more life-changing treatments into the hands of empowered patients. Together, we will work toward the ultimate goal of improving patient experiences and health outcomes.”

Noble was founded in 1994 and is located in Orlando, Florida, and employs 45 people at its state-of-the art training device design headquarters.

“Joining Aptar is an important step in our mission to support the healthcare community’s effort to improve patient outcomes through innovation, education and patient access,” said Jeff Baker, Noble CEO. “It is exciting to know that by leveraging the breadth of Aptar’s portfolio and global network, we will now reach more pharmaceutical partners, healthcare professionals, caregivers and ultimately, patients.”

“We look forward to working with Noble’s leadership and team of innovators as we continue to improve the patient onboarding process,” comments Gael Touya, President of Aptar Pharma. “This acquisition, which expands our services offerings in Injectables and Respiratory, continues our strategy of building services associated with our device portfolio and speaks to our unwavering commitment to helping patients improve adherence.”

Aptar announced that its Activ-Blister™ packaging solution for oral solid dose drug delivery was recently approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for a HIV prevention medicine.

The oral solid dose drug was developed by a leading pharmaceutical company in the HIV treatment and prevention space, and represents the first FDA approval of Aptar’s proprietary Activ-Blister™ packaging solution and proprietary application process developed by Aptar CSP Technologies.

The system protects oral solid drug products with a 3-Phase Activ-Polymer™ solution that is fully integrated into the blister package. This 3-Phase Activ-Polymer™ technology, which can be customized specifically for the drug developer’s formulation, offers a broad spectrum of specific drug protection including moisture adsorption, and oxygen and odor scavenging. Aptar’s portfolio of 3-Phase Activ-Polymer™ protective solutions helps biotech and pharmaceutical partners meet specific drug long-term and in-use stability requirements while maintaining therapeutic efficacy, all in a patient-friendly packaging configuration.

“I am very pleased to announce this recent FDA approval of our proprietary Activ-Blister™ technology,” commented Stephan Tanda, Aptar’s President and CEO. “This is a significant step that further validates the expanding portfolio of solutions offered by Aptar CSP Technologies. We will continue to leverage our proprietary 3-Phase Activ-Polymer™ technology to help our customers with unique protective formulations that derisk their drug development process and help strengthen their own offerings. The ultimate result is that we are creating meaningful solutions that help improve and save lives.”

3D Printing at Aptar

3D printing offers Aptar employees around the globe an opportunity to bring otherwise two-dimensional product designs into the physical world. This printing technique allows product designers and customers to evaluate product concepts and make faster adjustments than with steel molds. Check out the video and Q&A section below with Product Design Engineer, Sean Cho of Aptar Cary, for an in-depth look at 3D printing and how Aptar is using this technology to bring innovations to life.

3D Printing Q&A with Sean Cho – Product Design Engineer, Aptar Cary

  • What is 3D printing?
    • 3D printing is a process in which an object is created using an additive technique. In a more traditional method such as machining, where a solid block of material is slowly worked down until the final geometry is achieved, 3D printing only uses the material that is necessary to create the final part.
  • Why is it beneficial to the company?
    • Aptar utilizes 3D printing to help the Engineering team develop new products and concepts before committing to steel molds. The game-changer was bringing 3D printing in-house. This move has allowed Aptar to develop new concepts quicker and in higher numbers than ever before at a fraction of the cost to outside vendors.
  • How do you use 3D printing as a Product Design Engineer?
    • In the past, we chose which products to prototype using limited consumer data and virtual models. Today, we can 3D print several concepts simultaneously and evaluate them in a physical, tangible form and narrow down our selections based on real consumer testing. Changes can be made and reprinted in hours without having to deal with cost and timing of mold changes or waiting for open press time.
  • How can we use 3D printing to benefit the customer and drive sales?
    • With high quality 3D printing in-house, Aptar demonstrates speed and agility by offering our customers not only ergonomic models of early concepts, but photo ready or fully functional prototypes depending on their needs
  • What are the future possibilities for 3D printing?
    • An exciting development in 3D printing is in the area of injection molding. We are developing methods in which we can 3D print mold cavity and cores in order to create custom, low volume prototypes in weeks rather than months. Additionally, we can create custom inserts for our existing tools to deliver unique branding to our customers in days rather than weeks.
