Aptar Achieves ISO 14064 Certification for Energy and Greenhouse ...

Every year Aptar undergoes data assurance as part of our sustainability reporting. This data assurance process allows for consumption of electricity, fuel oil, and natural gas, and renewable energy purchases to be verified for accuracy and completeness by an external organization. This verification is important as it proves accuracy of Aptar’s annual corporate sustainability report and Carbon Disclosure Project responses, which is important for key stakeholders like our customers and investors.

In past years we have achieved a “limited assurance” statement which verified the accuracy of carbon emissions and associated absolute energy (electricity, fuels, natural gas, refrigerants). This year we added a process to assure emissions associated with raw materials, travel, and the shipment of our products. Also new this year is the official ISO certification. During the assurance, emissions data from each individual Aptar site is reviewed and there are a select number of sites who undergo site-level audits. Usually the audits take place on-site, but they were mostly conducted virtually in 2020 due to the Covid-19 pandemic.Thank you and congratulations to all Aptar sites, and an extra special thanks to the sites that were audited.

This initiative was led by Michele Del Grosso, Global Sustainability Project Manager who commented, “I am so grateful to the regional and local EHS leaders and members of the IS team who have supported this journey, especially during the COVID-19 crisis. With this achievement, we boost the reliability and credibility of our sustainability performance in front of our customers, suppliers and shareholders.”

Having reliable systems helps us understand consumption, set appropriate targets and monitor progress. We will announce Science-Based Targets later this year, on our journey to net zero emissions.

Aptar’s sustainability reports and data assurance statements can be found here on the Aptar website.

Aptar Submits Application for Emergency Use Authorization to the ...

Aptar is seeking Emergency Use Authorization (EUA) from the German Federal Institute for Drugs and Medical Devices (BfArM)  for a solution that allows for easy disinfecting of FFP2 filtering facepiece respirators (FFP2 masks). The FFP2 masks are desperately needed by healthcare personnel due to the global shortage of disposable masks during the COVID-19 pandemic.

In this simple disinfecting process, the FFP2 mask and a small strip of Aptar’s ActivShieldTM technology are placed inside any commonly available one-gallon plastic bag. The strip releases a controlled amount of chlorine dioxide inside the sealed bag to decontaminate the FFP2 mask. The process takes only two hours until the mask is ready to wear again. It can be performed on-site at the local hospital where the mask is being used. The EUA submission in Germany is part of Aptar’s strategy to expand global access to FFP2 respirators allowing for the decontamination and reuse of masks for ten cycles. This innovative patent pending technology can efficiently and effectively disinfect FFP2 masks used by healthcare workers and first responders.

The German EUA BfArM submission follows Aptar’s U.S. FDA Emergency Use Authorization submission in early April. Germany is thus the first country in the EU where an application to this effect has been submitted to the authorities.

“We are proud to continue to support the fight against the COVID-19 pandemic by furthering our efforts to bring this innovative technology to the global health care community. We have a long-standing presence in Germany and we will continue to support the communities where we live and work,” said Stephan Tanda, Aptar President and CEO. “Our technology provides a unique, simple, and effective way to help solve the critical problem of PPE shortages we’re currently facing. We look forward to working with the U.S. FDA and BfArM to bring ActivShieldTM to market and fulfill the ongoing unmet need.”

Chlorine dioxide has been widely used as a disinfectant in different industries, including the paper industry, drinking water treatment, food processing, and medical equipment. Aptar’s delivery mechanism uses the disinfecting properties of chlorine dioxide in a controlled sustained release within a contained volume.

Studies on the ActivShield™ system show the treatment to be 99.999% effective against viruses. Detailed data on the effectiveness and safety of the ActivShield™ system is available at www.aptaractivshield.com.

Aptar Requests U.S. FDA Emergency Use Authorization for N95 Filte...

Aptar, a global leader in drug delivery, consumer product dispensing and active packaging solutions, is seeking U.S. FDA Emergency Use Authorization (EUA) for a solution that allows easy disinfecting of N95 filtering facepiece respirators (N95 mask). The N95 masks are desperately needed by healthcare personnel due to the shortage of disposable masks during the COVID-19 pandemic.

In this simple disinfecting process, the N95 mask and a small strip of Aptar’s ActivShieldTM are placed inside any commonly available one-gallon plastic bag. The strip releases a controlled amount of chlorine dioxide inside the sealed bag to decontaminate the N95 mask. The process takes only three hours until the mask is ready to wear again. It can be performed on-site at the local hospital where the mask is being used.

Aptar has submitted its safety and effectiveness data to the FDA for EUA review. The company is working to provide approximately four million ActivShield strips per week and is working to expand its production capacity with the intent to deliver ten million per week by the end of April. “We are extremely encouraged by the promising data generated so far and are eager to deliver this technology to the front line and support the fight against the pandemic,” said John Belfance, President of Aptar CSP Technologies. If the FDA approves the EUA, then ActivShield will immediately become available for this important use.

This innovative patent pending technology can efficiently and effectively disinfect N95 masks used by healthcare workers and first responders.

“Aptar’s technology provides a unique, simple, and effective way to help solve the critical problem of PPE shortages we’re currently facing,” said Stephan Tanda, Aptar President and CEO. “We are aiming to provide a solution that is not only fast, but it does not require special equipment or training, making it potentially accessible to the wider healthcare community. This could enable healthcare workers to retain and disinfect their own face mask, helping to maintain continued proper fit to their face.”

At Aptar, it’s not just about making a better dispensing or drug delivery system, it’s about making a difference. As a recognized leader in our field, we take our place of influence seriously. We give back to the communities where our people live and work. We want to be part of the solution for a more sustainable world. That’s why we are advocating for a circular economy where recycling improves and the use of recycled materials becomes the norm in our industry. We want to deliver solutions and shape the future.

To that end, we are proud to be named “One of the Top 100 Most Sustainable Companies 2019” by Barron’s and one of “America’s Most Responsible Companies 2020” by Newsweek.

Here is a quick look at our Environment, Social, Governance key partnerships and achievements from the year.

Circular Economy

Aptar is a signatory of the Ellen MacArthur New Plastics Economy Global commitment and has joined forces with organizations, such as CE100, that are committed to changing how we produce, use and reuse plastic. Aptar also became a member of the World Business Council for Sustainable Development (WBCSD). Connecting with WBCSD’s 200 other members provides an invaluable opportunity to share best practices and make a circular economy a reality.

Aptar’s partners, PureCycle and Terracycle, were both named to the TIME 100 Best Inventions for 2019. PureCycle Technologies was named for their Ulta-Pure Recycled Polypropylene (UPRP) which is a food grade recycled resin and Terracycle was included for their e-commerce platform, “Loop”, where customers can purchase products they know and love in refillable containers and Loop will pick up the containers after use to be cleansed and sent out again.

Diversity and Inclusion

Today Aptar is taking steps to lead in gender diversity and equality in the workplace, by enabling a culturally diverse workforce and nurturing an inclusive and welcoming culture.

These principles are pervasive throughout Aptar’s organization, beginning at the very top. Today, 30% of Aptar’s Board of Directors is comprised of directors added in the past two years, with 50% being added in the past 5 years. The Board includes 40% women and all Board committees are chaired by women directors. We have been recognized by the Women’s Forum of New York as a Corporate Champion for leading the way toward gender balance on corporate boards. Aptar is also included in the SPDR® SSGA Gender Diversity Index ETF (SHE), which invests in US large-capitalization companies that rank among the highest in their sector in terms of gender diversity within senior leadership positions. Aptar has also joined more than 60 other leading global companies in the Catalyst CEO Champions for Change movement through a commitment to furthering gender equality, diversity, and inclusion in the workplace.

Looking Ahead to 2020

Aptar Acquires Noble International, a Leader in Drug Delivery Tra...

Aptar has acquired Noble International, a leader in drug delivery training devices and patient onboarding. This acquisition furthers Aptar’s strategy to broaden its portfolio of services that support pharmaceutical and biotech customers through all stages of their drug development journey.

The proper administration, in particular self-administration, of certain medications can be challenging.  With the movement of treatments from the healthcare provider to the home, the need to ensure accurate, consistent and safe use of the device has become a critical component of the effectiveness of the treatment.

Noble’s purpose is to improve patient experiences and outcomes by developing patient-centric advanced drug delivery system training devices – including autoinjectors, prefilled syringes, on-body and respiratory devices – for the world’s leading biopharmaceutical companies and original equipment manufacturers. Noble has also developed a connected solution for injectable devices, which senses and monitors how a patient interacts with the specific steps of drug delivery, and can wirelessly transmit real-time data.

Human behaviors and user experiences are critical elements of Noble’s proprietary training device design process. Combined with patient onboarding programs, Noble’s training devices – which mimic the feel, force and function of the actual drug delivery device – are designed to reduce error and increase device familiarity, both keys to helping patients improve adherence and, ultimately, health outcomes.

Stephan Tanda, Aptar President and CEO, stated, “We are pleased to welcome the Noble team to the Aptar family. This strategic acquisition meets our disciplined approach of acquiring companies with strong positions in attractive markets, proprietary technologies and robust growth fundamentals. The combination of Noble and Aptar will bring additional value to our pharmaceutical customers as they seek to put more life-changing treatments into the hands of empowered patients. Together, we will work toward the ultimate goal of improving patient experiences and health outcomes.”

Noble was founded in 1994 and is located in Orlando, Florida, and employs 45 people at its state-of-the art training device design headquarters.

“Joining Aptar is an important step in our mission to support the healthcare community’s effort to improve patient outcomes through innovation, education and patient access,” said Jeff Baker, Noble CEO. “It is exciting to know that by leveraging the breadth of Aptar’s portfolio and global network, we will now reach more pharmaceutical partners, healthcare professionals, caregivers and ultimately, patients.”

“We look forward to working with Noble’s leadership and team of innovators as we continue to improve the patient onboarding process,” comments Gael Touya, President of Aptar Pharma. “This acquisition, which expands our services offerings in Injectables and Respiratory, continues our strategy of building services associated with our device portfolio and speaks to our unwavering commitment to helping patients improve adherence.”
